Like so much in design, it all depends on interpretation, does it not?
Fashion is the manner in which something is done or how it happens; a characteristic or habitual practice.
A trend is a tendency. The general direction in which something tends to move.
An area rug Fashion Trend, therefore, is the manner in which we are utilizing Carpet and Rugs today. Our tastes are changing and our interiors are shaped differently than they were even 15 years ago. It is no wonder that we are changing the way we use the "fuzzy side up" forms of floor coverings.
The floor covering industry, and in particular the handmade rug industry has made great changes in the last 15 years as well. Our clients now have so many more choices regarding designs, shapes, sizes, and textures available in rugs. In addition, the advent of "made to order" rugs delivered in shorter and shorter lead times have given us all the opportunity to create individual pieces that reflect both the practical needs of designers and clients, as well as their aspirations.
We will begin "trends" by looking at an older design that has opened the way for today's look. Special thanks to Bill Ward for a great discussion about this topic. This design is called Dots color Moss by Barbara Barry for Tufenkian. This rug, originally designed in the mid 1990's, broke new ground and changed the way designers viewed the possibilities of area rugs.
| Two newer iterations of this concept, shown below in the much the same color palette as the Dots Moss, are 'Belle Leaves' and 'Pin Stripe' from Salmon Khan, the lead designer at Lapchi: Modern Carpet Culture. |
